Koumoundourou Square

Koumoundourou Square

Koumoundourou Square

A double periscope viewing high over the high buildings and under the ground controls two different positions of ruins in Athens. The subterranean excavation area is here proposed to be constructed under the square where a rich archaeological site is promised. The Acropolis hill over the buildings of the modern city gives another different view of the exemplary idealized building of the european culture. The square of the modern city is built at an emblematic site in the middle of one of the three sides of the "Athenian triangle" designed by Kleanthis and Schaubert and retaken by Klenze. The periscope undertakes the role to show the areas of this existence of ruins in the city fabric. Archeology may be an idealized view of an emblematic building or a part of the underground of the modern city, together with its infrastructure; always related to a distant and not accurate view the periscope introduces the ruins as an always uncanny experience of this city, always isolated and estranged from the performance of the Athenian everyday life. The same area, extended towards Avdi square serves as site for the later project of the Antonas office named: The Weak Monumental.
